Separating sports and politics in the Olympic Games is an impossible dream and a bad idea - GERAL SAPEY, Reporters Without Borders
The Olympics are a sport subject - CELSO AMORIM, Brazil's Foreign Relations Minister, explaining the country's view that the games must be seen as a subject with no political conotation

Athletes boycott: NEVER. Leaders boycott the opening: for sure. Celebrating China makes no sense.
We should boycott the Olympics. China needs to let the UN into Tibet before it is to late. To many Tibetens have been killed and tortured for stupid reasons. The Chinese Government lies to it's people and stands as a bully to Tibetans. The Olympic Games is uncovering their blanket of shame to the world. Well done to London, France and San Fran for practicing Freedom of Speech. I was at the protest against the touch in London.
There are other ways to protest efficiently and successfully. Destroying the spirit of the ceremony is just childish and uncalled for. Protestors shouldnt influence the flow of the ceremony although they are allow their views been expressed. You dont see people blocking road, burning cars just for their views been heard. So why should any protestors destroy the spirit of the game by extinguish the fire? This is an act of terrorism and runners are terrorised due to the saftey concerns.
Don't think that it is wrong to mix sport politics?and we chinese have done so much ,is there any reason to boycott it?London is to held it four years later, and you cannot image what would happen if UK decide to boycott BeiJing games. What's more, most of you havn't being to china and let alone Tibet.stop making chaos and go here and find the truth with your own eyes, please! And that's the only way to know the truth.

China is patient. It stores wealth. It slowly exercises it’s influence. In 50 or 100 years, it will be the world’s superpower, as America is today. Will it still be a one-party state by then? ... only the Chinese people can decide that. History would indicate that it will not. Totalitarian states always fall, eventually, from the inside-out. But not without great sufferance and loss for the people who live there.
So really, the Olympics is just a sideshow for what’s really going on in China. If the Olympics were not being held there, would any of us pay attention to what’s happening?
My sympathies go to the Tibetan people. The land we live on does not truly belong to us. However I feel the Tibetans were closer to understanding that, than the Chinese people, and government, will ever be.
Fine. Let’s call a boycott of the 2012 London Olympic Games, too. Because the British government suppressed the demand of independece of Northern Ireland and Scotland. Oh, since French invaded Corsica and won’t let them get independent, don’t let France hold another Olympics anymore.
I’m a Chinese and I totally agree with the criticizing on human rights abuse in China. For example, this site is blocked by Chinese government. But there is no more abuse to Tibetan than that to any other people in China. As a matter of fact, there are many priveleged rights for those ethnic minorites in China like carrying swords, having two children, gaining awarded marks in exams for entering higher schools, etc. By the way, I object the banning of carrying sword-like tools but agree with birth control.
I hate Communist Chinese government ,I hate Communism, and I’ve always appreciated the democarcy in the West - freedom of speech, freedom of press, etc. But those biased reports regarding the recent riot in Tibet disappointed me a lot!
Tibet belongs to China. The integrity of China’s territory can never be challenged! For those protesters who don’t know Tibet well or even can’t tell the exact location of Tibet, please go there, try to know the people there!
I totally support a boycott of the Olympics. Chinese people writing here seem to think that this is only about Tibet, but I would boycott the games for Falun Gong, for trying to force Taiwan to join a totalitarian state. Not to mention the massive abuse of political rights on a scale unseen in any other state in the world (and this is the next world superpower?)
- One party state
- no independent parties critical of CCP
- no multi party elections
- media censorship and state propaganda
- internet firewall and internet police
- intimidation and imprisonment of dissidents
As if this wasn’t enough, the Chinese people have recently decided the French and the British shouldnt allow people to demonstrate against the torch relay!
The reaction of the Chinese people to this incident has just shown me how dangerous the Chinese system of muffling dissent and controlling what people read and what information they access actually is!
I doubt Chinese people will understand it (of course it will all be because of Western media’s bias!) but the best way to send a clear message that we disapprove of this system is to avoid the Olympics, don’t watch it either (lower TV ratings) and try to boycott Chinese products.
The Chinese people’s reaction to this is just disgusting!
It is hypocrisy trying to boycott 2008 Olympic Game in any form. The US is the most aggressive country in the world and killed hundred of thousands of people in Iraq. Why not boycott all US events? Talking about supporting a repressive regime. Most of US allies in the mideast are repressive regimes and have bad human right record. Look at what you have done before blaming others.
I think boycott is meaningless. It is escape from problem. To change Chinese situation, breakaway from the ideology of socialist is indispensable. And to change to democracy, an opportunity to make pocketbook room to a life of all Chinese people and get to know various things should increase. Olympic game is one of opportunity to change, I think. We have to talk to each other, listen to each other, and think each other. I hate any kind of violence, because I’m a Buddhist. The recent performances of Reporters Without Borders are violent. They show a violent skirmish and show that they are working. It is stupid performance. They should remember their true mission. Please go to China, watch, and hear it, search the cause of the problem, and open to us.
When Iraq was attacked and huge number of people died, such a worldwide demonstration was not performed. Why?
